NSF’s Scrub Club® was created in 2005 as an educational tool for teachers, caregivers and parents as a visionary, first-of-its-kind website promoting handwashing activities for kids 3 to 8 years old.

The Novel Coronavirus and COVID-19

We recently redesigned the Scrub Club® website with new characters and a new look and feel. This relaunch was originally scheduled for the 2020 back-to-school season, but we decided to debut the website early to assist families during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the heroes and villains of the Scrub Club® were created before the novel coronavirus outbreaks, the handwashing lessons and activities they share will help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and other nasty germs.

Young kids may understand the importance of handwashing, but do they know why is it important? The Scrub Club® helps explain how germs live on surfaces and can be picked up by their hands. It’s a fun way to help kids understand the science and the “why” around handwashing.

Raw meat. Sneezing and coughing. Contaminated surfaces. Germs can be almost anywhere. Talk with your kids about what happens after a surface is contaminated: With their unwashed hands, they touch their face, eyes or nose or even ready-to-eat food. Now, they have spread the germs to themselves and could get sick. Reinforcing the importance of every step of handwashing can help stop the spread of germs like the flu and the novel coronavirus.

NSF will continue to add resources to the site as they become available and welcomes your feedback by emailing scrubclub@nsf.org.

Note: The Scrub Club® is designed for children who are 3 to 8 years old. Children in this age range are at different cognitive and developmental levels. To emphasize the importance of handwashing, NSF recommends that parents and educators aid in the educational process by viewing the Scrub Club® website with young children. Older school-age children will be able to navigate through the site with more autonomy as they benefit from the fun and informative learning experiences.
